Biography
Jos Derksen was educated in the Netherlands where he obtained a PhD degree in Applied Physics from Eindhoven University of Technology in 1991. After a short period with the Dutch Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) he joined Delft University of Technology in 1992. In 2007 he moved to the University of Alberta, Canada. In 2013 he came back to Europe to work with the University of Aberdeen (UK) and - in 2014/2015 - Delft University. His research focuses on highly resolved simulations of multiphase flow and transport processes.
Abstract
Systems consisting of immiscible liquids have diverse and important applications in chemical and related engineering: extraction processes and enhanced oil recovery are two prominent examples. By performing numerical simulations we try to answer questions related to drop size distributions, coalescence and break-up phenomena, and mass transfer. At macroscopic scales, turbulent flow and the way it interacts with liquid drops is a key topic. At the meso-scale we focus on accurate resolution of deforming and rupturing liquid-liquid interfaces. At the micro (molecular) scale, three-phase contact line motion over substrates is studied.
