Biography
Paul Miles manages the engine combustion research at Sandia National Laboratories, where he works closely with the U.S. Department of Energy and other government-industry partnership organizations to define engine combustion research needs. Dr. Miles is a SAE Fellow and has been recognized with several awards for technical and programmatic accomplishments by the SAE, ASME, and USDRIVE. He is a past co-chair of the SAE Powertrain, Fuels and Lubricants activities, serves as the Operating Agent for the International Energy Agency Combustion Technology Collaboration Programme, and is an associate editor or member of the editorial board for several international journals.
Abstract
Growing concern over vehicle emissions impacting both the global and local environment have created significant political and regulatory pressure to curtail the continued use of internal combustion engine powered vehicles (ICEVs) in favor of plug-in electric powered vehicles (PEVs). While most people will agree that transition to a carbon-free transportation energy system as quickly as possible is essential, there is often little attention paid to the question of how environmental impact can best be managed during this transition. In this talk, based on potential improvements in ICEVs, projected market penetration of PEVs, and the projected evolution of the carbon intensity of the US electricity grid, we show that effective policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the next 30 years will require aggressive measures to both speed PEV market penetration and measures to increase the fuel efficiency of ICEVs. Local emissions from ICEVs are also examined and are found to compare favorably with PEVs – though for both technologies, improvement is clearly desirable.
