Abstract
Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019 was announced to be awarded to Whittingham, Goodenough, and Yoshino, for their pioneering contributions to the development of lithium ion battery (LIB). As an alternative and competing electrochemical power source, fuel cell also has the potential to confer great benefits to humanity. Actually, the challenges in fuel cell are even more daunting than that in LIB in many aspects. Yet due to fuel cell’s long history and stronger integrational nature, it is difficult to select a few researchers to be the candidates. Against such a difficulty, the long journey of ever-continuing advance of fuel cell technology are reviewed, the milestones and breakthroughs highlighted, and possible candidates suggested. In addition, the fairness of the practice in recognizing the outstanding contribution to human being is discussed within the context of grand changes in the challenges we are facing, and the attitudes and approaches we are taking. Ironically, it is argued that the laureates may be the last one who needs the prize.
