Biography
Prof. Hiroaki Abe is a full professor at the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management and Nuclear Professional School, The University of Tokyo. Before joining The University of Tokyo, he worked at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Tohoku University and had visiting experiences at Argonne National Laboratory, Arizona State University, GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He was selected as an AESJ Fellow in 2023, and he served as committee chair of the Nuclear Materials Division and Nuclear Fuel Division of AESJ. His research interest focuses on the materials in extreme environments, aiming to reveal fundamental mechanism of the degradation process under extreme environments, such as irradiation, corrosion, and hydrogenation, in various materials for nuclear engineering applications.
Abstract
Nuclear materials, both fission and fusion materials, are exposed to a harsh environment; namely, irradiation, high temperature, and interaction with coolants. We have been working on fuel cladding materials in LWR, structure materials in LWR, and first-wall and structure materials in fusion reactors. In this presentation, we introduce our recent progress on (1) the development of accident tolerant fuels (ATF) and their environmental degradations, and (2) radiation damage study in oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels, Cr, ZrCr2, WCr2, and other materials. Radiation-induced instability of oxide particles, amorphization in Laves phase, and other phenomena were observed, and the related details will be presented.
